No Party, No Politics

No Party, No Politics!

Hi! Happy Thursday!

The Rise of No Party Politicians

Recently Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, announced he's exploring running for President as an independent in 2020. On its face this makes no sense because how could a no party politician garner any support from the Democratic or Republican parties? Without any party support what can be done? Howard Schultz is declaring a run for President having served no time in party politics.

Andrew Yang is running as a Democrat in 2020 on a single issue platform: universal basic income of $1,000/month for anyone over eighteen years of age. Andrew Yang is declaring a run having served no time in party politics.

Bernie ran for President as a Democrat even though he is registered as an independent and has been for thirty years. Bernie has served no time in party politics.

Trump declared as a Republican having served no time in party politics.

What we are seeing is a rise in politicians with no time in party politics.

If we combine these "no time in party politics", independent politicians with the recent, unprecedented calcification of party opposition then the result is weak tea politics:
  1. Major legislation such as the ACA of 2010 or the tax cut of 2017 have been passed with no votes by the opposition party.
  2. Overturning major legislation of the opposition party becomes top campaign issues of subsequent elections.
  3. The opposition party to the President blocks as much as possible the legislation of the President.
  4. Parties vote solely as a block and politicians do not cross party lines, putting party before country.
Consider when Obama became President.  Senate leader Mitch McConnell said that he intended to stop one-hundred percent of everything Obama wanted to pass. One hundred percent.  And he did. His blockade was so effective that Harry Reid had to change the Senate rules to allow votes of fifty-percent majority in order to get judge appointments through the Senate. McConnell then used this rule change to pass the largest tax cut in recent history without a single Democratic vote.

Party Presidents Today Are Independent of Their Party

Presidents of the same party have very limited support of their party because they run on agendas without first getting any support from the party they belong too.

Party politicians today run as independents. I say this because politicians today feel no need to first consult with the party before they promote a campaign legislative agenda.

Obama ran a campaign with no party input for his health care promises; he had no buy in and no approval by the Democratic party. As a result when Obama submitted his proposal to the House then Nancy Pelosi rejected his proposal outright, one-hundred percent. We know this because there was a leak in the Obama administration where a transcript of a phone call between Pelosi and Obama was leaked to the press. Pelosi and Obama were at loggerheads and came to no agreement at all. Instead, Nancy created the ACA bill with no input for Obama. It has oft been touted that Obama lied to Americans being able to keep their current doctor. Obama didn't lie. His proposal did allow people to keep their doctors, it is just that Pelosi rejected his proposal outright.

Trump also ran as an independent. Trump proposed his border wall with no input and no support from the Republican party. As a result the Republican party never funded the border wall for two years.

With Party, Minimal Politics

So both Obama and Trump experienced both one-hundred percent opposition from the opposition party and at times one-hundred percent opposition from their own party on major legislation like the ACA and the border wall. The root cause of this is politicians run as independents even when running as a party politician. They do not get approval or support of the party for campaign agendas.

Back before 1968 then politicians had to adhere to a party platform,  run on the party platform and not just their independent agenda. Today party politicians can run on any campaign promise independent of party approval. The result has been the ACA passed with no Obama input and no border wall funded by Republicans for Trump.

No Party, No Politics

What this country needs is party politicians and not independent politicians, especially when we consider historically unprecedented party calcification. We've had two administrations now where the President was effectively independent of their party and we've seen the results. So what could we expect then if Bernie Sanders, Howard Schultz, or Andrew Yang were elected? First, we'll see at least one party with one-hundred percent opposition, like Republicans with Bernie Sanders. Howard Schultz may well experience one-hundred percent opposition from both parties. Arguably Bernie would fair better. Bernie thinks by running for President as a Democrat then this will buy him some political capital with the Democratic party to spend. Uh, no. Bernie has been in Congress for thirty years and snubbed the Democratic party outright for all thirty years. Do you really think the Democratic party is going to get over that?

If we really want to see change in this country then we need to change course:
  1. Politicians should run on approved party platforms of very likely support once that politician is elected.
  2. Full American support and not just one party.
With respect to full American support then I'm thinking specifically of Andrew Yang and his Universal Basic Income agenda of $1,000/mo. I mean, come on, even if Yang somehow gets Democrats convinced he'll never convince Republicans who refuse to even raise minimum wage because they consider it giving away money to lazy bums. Republicans will never support Universal Basic Income. Why run on a platform that is anathema to one party from the get-go?

Full American Support

We need full American support for agendas. We are living in an absurd time where if one party passes legislation such as the Affordable Care Act then immediately the opposition party works to undermine and repeal the law. This is no way to run a country.

We must demand that a politician appeal to more than just the party of choice.

Full American support means we the people have a role. We the people of the US need to grow up. We need to decide to come together. United we stand, divided we fall. Today our political divide is ensuring our fall. Is that really what we want?
