Welcome To My World

Welcome To My World

An Open Letter to the Trump Appalled

2020/02/07

At the age of fourteen, roughly, I read the Bible. I declared the Bible the most appalling, evil, putrid, wretched, disgusting piece of immorality imaginable. Now imagine you are fourteen and realizing that the rest of the world around you believes this evil trash is good? This feeling may be the same feeling you are experiencing with Trump supporters treating evil as good.  As an atheist let me just say, welcome to my world. We atheists face this kind of bizarre up-is-down, right-is-wrong, evil-is-good feeling every single day. Trump is nothing new or exceptional in this regard to me.  Further I have dealt with this since I was a child. You've only had to deal with this since 2016. So allow me to help you navigate this experience, this appalling unsettling feeling that seemingly never ends.

Relax, breathe, and let me walk you through the healthy, productive responses. I enjoy life fully.

In general it is always good to acknowledge the cup is both half-empty and half-full. Don't just focus on the empty or the full half. In Trump's case I'm suggesting you count your blessings because for whatever reason you are not weak minded.

You see, I won the genetic lottery when it comes to intelligence and emotional capability. The upside is that I understand the world and I'm happy. The down side is that rest of the world is still roiling in confusion and misery. Our job as the blessed is to do what we can to help others make sense and create happy. The dysfunctional aspects of our culture will get along just fine without our contributions.

The worst evil of religion is dividing the human population. All religions by definition have to be subscribed too. That is the most evil, wicked, filthy, wretched morality ever. We are humans. No divisions.

What happens when one does not see divisions? I love everybody and if you are appalled at Trump then chances are good then so do you. Loving everybody does not mean liking everybody or not having hate. Loving everybody is the action of enabling everyone regardless of personal feelings towards them. Loving everybody is the action of giving everyone  life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness no matter how unhealthy their genetic and environmental circumstances make them. For example, the death penalty is evil because we cannot study and prevent murders by killing murderers. We can only study and prevent murders by studying murderers, understanding scientifically why people come to murder and then creating conditions such that murderers don't act on those impulses. Historically if societies had taken this approach of studying and reducing murder rates rather than having a religious justice system that kills murderers then there would be much less murder in the world. Further, it is a moral principle to help the least of us, to help those people born under the  worst circumstances including having murdering tendencies. Everyone should have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness independent of life's unbidden circumstances. Justice systems never work because the concept of justice itself is evil.

Religion is evil because it divides. Thus it is today the conservatives in America talk about their enemies as un-American, un-patriotic, un-Christian, and non-human. Dehumanizing those that don't subscribe to one's world view is religion. It is also the character of a narcissist like Trump. However, Trump's narcissism  doesn't divide based upon a subscription to religion but a subscription to him. There has been a temporary power alignment between Trump and the Evangelicals where they are treating subscribers to each other as one and the same.

But not us Trump appalled. As an atheist we feel we all each just get on shot at this life. This one shot should be given to everyone to the extent possible no matter how broken one's genetic code or horrendous one's childhood. We should do our best to help the bullies and the mean people to make a go of it. One shot is all any of us get.

This is how I as an atheist look at the upside-down world as I have developed since childhood:

1. It's always been upside-down.
2. Progress has been made over the centuries in improving society to align with reality.
3. It is not a political pendulum swinging back-and-forth between conservative and liberal, but rather growing pains and growing spurts. Gay-marriage, trans rights, and other societal changes create growing pains from growing spurts. In between the growth we stagnate or regress.
4. Acknowledge your blessings daily. Every day when I first wake up and before I go to bed I feel grateful to have been lucky enough to have been born exceptionally intelligent and exceptionally emotional. In between those book ends of day beginning and day ending I try to improve upon society to the best that I can.
5. Recognize humanity is in its infancy on a billion-year scale of desired human existence and that it would be rather boring if we had all figured out already. We are waking up from history. There's time.
6. Laugh.
7. All of us knowingly avoid awareness. Trump supporters' willing lack of self-awareness of racism and poor judgment supporting Trump reflects an ancient aspect of human nature that has always been there. Something new just didn't pop up. Think of it this way. We all know we are going to die. We all know the average life-expectancy. And yet how many of us to plan our life expectancy days? None. Instead we prefer to pretend we are unaware we are going to die in our day-to-day living. Finding out there are Trump voters is like our discovery you have less than a year to live from some terminal illness. We all knew we were going to die, but we prefer not to think about it. As an atheist I can tell you that what you are seeing in Trump voters is nothing new given religious history. What the Trump appalled may be seeing as if for the first time is something I recognize every day. For example, the Catholic Church has not only survived decades of pedophilia scandals, it is doing just fine. Nothing has changed with the Catholic Church in its world standing. Evil being seen as good is all around you. You just choose not to be aware.

That's it. We are waking up from history. All the crap that is going on today like with Trump reflects our long history in human nature of being evil to each other and calling it good. Trump's rise as a cultural reaction to gay marriage and Obama is a natural human nature response to cultural growing spurts. We are experiencing growing pains.

Finally, to all you fellow Americans appalled at Trump I say to you it is long past time to be appalled at Democracy's failure and be aware that Democracy is dead. The solutions to failed Democracy are out there in Irreni World Scale. Our day-one division in 1787 into a two-party system reflects the divisive evil in religion. We are all humans sharing one planet and it is time to give up childish divisive notions like two parties. There are no parties in Irreni World Scale, just people.
