Political Theater 101

Happy Wednesday!

Political Theater 101 is a notion that what we see in politics is carefully crafted to secure an agenda and is not what is presented.

One script that is used time and time again is the incumbency script. In this exchange between (D) Sen. Sherrod Brown and (R) Steve Mnuchin you will see Brown pretend to be outraged about opening the economy too soon at the expense of American lives in this video exchange:



The incumbency script goes like this. Congress passes a bill spending large sums of money but does not want to be held accountable for that spending. Accountability would jeopardize incumbency. In this case the first two CARES bills crafted by the Senate and passed with near unanimous votes gave all the responsibility for spending $2 trillion dollars to Steve Mnuchin. The first version had no Congressional oversight. The Congress decided at the last minute that perhaps their cynicism was two obvious. Also they need a stage for political theater. So the Senate added an oversight committee who's only power would be to investigate after the spending. That's right. The oversight committee has no responsibility in overseeing the spending. In this exchange between Brown and Mnuchin then you are seeing the theater. Brown gets to be all self-righteous and sanctimonious during a very public testimony being promoted by the news. This will actually win Brown votes as opposed to any Senator being held accountable for money Congress spent. This is the Incumbency script. Spend money but then give the Executive branch all the authority for allocation. Then Congress "investigates" and sings songs of public sympathy to energize their party base to win them votes and retain incumbency.

We are being played. Democracy is dead folks. We need to admit that. There are no honest actors in Washington. Not one. They are all cynical and corrupt.

Revolution though is not the solution. The global economy has seen to the US being to big too fail. Instead we need to dissolve Democracy with new innovations of governing. We need to start Irreni World Scale today. Oh sure, a two-hundred year plan is an impossible sell in this age of instant gratification. But sell it we must.

Bad Reasoning Bad reasoning. We all have it and do it. Some of us more than others. How many times have we heard the average person doesn't understand finances? And yet everyone is expected to have their retirement invested? What kind of mad world is this? We demand financial savvy where none exists? It is almost as if the system is rigged to rip us all off while telling us it is our fault and we buy it hook, line, and sinker? One of my throw-away lines with respect to atheism is that religion is for people who cannot accept "I don't know" as an answer. I could brag that a religious inability to accept "I don't know" is due to a lack of humility. But that's not the case. The reason people cannot accept "I don't know" is that "I don't know" is unsatisfying, it doesn't satisfy to provide ground for traction to move forward in life. But that's not true. I don't know is an actionable and tractable answer, and so I give to you this debrief. There has been news lately surrounding Amnesty International's proposed new platform to decriminalize prostitution.  Should we? Originally I thought about entitling this blog "Empathy for All" and not "Irreni". Empathy for all is how one thinks in scale of a planet of seven billion people. There is no us versus them: just us. On this planet. Us on this planet. Us on this planet we call Earth. And wait for it...! I will get to the Data Center on The Moon by the end of this post. When I was growing up I ran into a narrative that I could not empathize with. I was raised to be Christian. I was raised that in order to be moral and do good one needed to be a Christian.  The only problem with that narrative is that it did not fit with my reality.
