Love Actually <3

Hi! Happy Tuesday!

Irreni World Scale is about solutions and not punditry.

Today's solution is about love actually. Or, about a philosophy of win-win as opposed to winners and losers as has been ushered in by Donald Trump.

I mentioned Trump but this topic is love actually. The criticisms herein are mostly not about Trump,  but rather targeted at the Democratic and Republican parties, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye the science guy, Barak Obama and pretty much any thought leader in the world today.

First, just because picking on Trump has been abused to death, I'm going to pick on a couple of scientists:

Neil deGrasse Tyson and the value of philosophy
By Massimo on May 12, 2014

It seems like my friend Neil deGrasse Tyson [1] has done it again: he has dismissed philosophy as a useless enterprise, and actually advised bright students to stay away from it. It is not the first time Neil has done this sort of thing, and he is far from being the only scientist to do so. But in his case the offense is particularly egregious, for two reasons: first, because he is a highly visible science communicator; second, because I told him not to, several times.

Bill Nye is Not the Philosophy Guy
by Bishop Robert BarronApril 05, 2016
Reliable sources have informed me that for the millennial generation Bill Nye is a figure of great importance, due to his widely-watched program from the 1990’s called “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” ...  In a rambling and largely incoherent response to an interlocutor who wondered whether philosophy is still relevant, Nye denigrated the discipline, stating that philosophy never deviates from common sense, that it doubts the reality of sense experience, and that it engages in speculation about whether we might be part of an intergalactic ping pong match!

So what's the point about philosophy here? The point here is that philosophy and science play two distinct roles in our lives.

Philosophy expresses our desires about what we want and who we are. Science expresses our capability to bring about our desires.

That's it.

Pop culture in such movies as "Love Actually" and two Trek movies, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (TWOK) and "Star Trek: The Search for Spock" (TSS) explain these roles in very approachable manners. As a Trekie then I'll go with the Trek movies.

In TWOK Spock opens the movie with a philosophy taken from Charles Dickens' book, "A Tale of Two Cities." That philosophy is:

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

As every Trekkie knows the climax of TSS ends with rescuing Spock stating:
Sometimes the needs of the one outweighs the needs of the few, or the many.

In TWOK and TSS we learn a philosophical lesson about sacrifice. Every person has the right to sacrifice their life for a greater purpose, and we can even do so collectively as a group for a single person.

Sacrifice is love actually.

So we've discussed what philosophy is at this point as well as the ultimate choice of a philosophy being self-sacrifice as an expression of love.

Now let us begin a journey then of love circa 1972 and the end of the Vietnam War. We are going to end this journey in 2016 reflecting back on what we learned and what we are facing today.

The Vietnam War concluded in shame for the United States, we lost. It was our first loss since winning WWII. As shame for losing goes, this was a super shame especially amplified by at  being a world super-power as well as also being world televised. Ouch.

We did learn from our war loss though.  For example we learned this principle of the Powell Doctrine:
Is there a plausible exit strategy to avoid endless entanglement?
What's sad about the Power Doctrine is that Powell himself was snookered into violating this principle in the Iraq war of 2003. We had no exit strategy, none at all.

Another principle of the Powell Doctrine is:
Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?
The latter is significant due to a major philosophical shift after the Vietnam War with respect to foreign policy. The US learned the hard way that peaceful change is less expensive in both money and American lives than war. Once you know that then a principle of "Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?" makes sense.

For example, we didn't declare war on the terrorists of Colombia, instead we declared a "War on Drugs" via law enforcement. Law enforcement is a peaceful process.

What the US learned after the Vietnam War is that foreign policy  is not a zero-sum game.  It is both possible and desirable for both sides to win.

It is important to note that both Republicans and Democrats bought into a "win-win" peaceful philosophy over a "war" philosophy after 1972. Colin Powell, after all, is a Republican.

Republicans practiced "win-win" philosophy to win the cold war and this fact was brought to my attention at a conference I attended in 1989 right after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

At the conference a key note speaker was Arthur Hartman, the former Ambassador to the Soviet Union under Reagan. The topic of the speech he gave was the Reagan Administration's decision to use two different philosophies with respect to China and the Soviet Union. The US wanted to bring an end to communism. A debate ensued in the Reagan Administration as to which philosophical approach would be more effective: political or economical reform. The Reagan Administration could not come to a consensus so a deal was made within the administration to try both; political change was the reform chosen for the Soviet Union and economic policy was the reform chosen for China. The point is both reform types were "win-win" philosophies. The objective was the Soviet Union and China would both be stronger countries depending on have better relations with the US: win-win.

And today we are living with those reforms as a result of Republican choices made in the 1980s.

However, in 2003 our foreign policy philosophy changed back to using war. We went from a win-win philosophy for managing our enemies to a war footing: winners and losers. We treated war as a zero sum game where the Bush administration published a deck of cards of the top Al Qaida leaders. Cut off the snake's head and game over, or so that philosophy goes.

Ironically, George Bush Jr.'s own father got the philosophy correct as time has proven. George Bush Sr. wrote a book in the 1990s that defended his decision not to overthrow Sadaam Hussein in the first Gulf War. In that book he stated that removing Sadaam would have been "opening the gates of hell". And hell is exactly what exists in Syria and the middle east. And we are responsible for that by using a winners and losers philosophy.

Democrats are every bit as responsible as Republicans for this shift. Democrats voted for the initial involvement in Iraq and have voted for the continuing resolutions every since, including during Barak's years. Barak has continued the war on terror unabated.

ISIS is simply stated the disbanded Iraq Army. If we hadn't of invaded Iraq and disbanded the Iraq army then there would be no ISIS and no tragedy in Aleppo today. Think of all the dead and suffering we caused using a war philosophy. Breaks my heart that so many people's lives have been ruined who wanted nothing to do with any of it.

The "win-win" solution to 9/11 would have been law enforcement, working with the International community to hunt down Osama Bin Laden and bring him to justice in a court of law. But we regressed.

And that regression is the saddest lesson of them all. The epitaph of the 21st Century is going to be that all of our problems, all or our demise, was brought on not due to the lack of solutions, but by rolling back solutions of past lessons learned, especially the lesson of peaceful foreign policy being cheaper and more effective than war.

And now we have elected a President with a winners and losers philosophy. Trump is a bully all about winners and losers. I guess it is some form of karma that the hell unleashed by the US in the middle east is about to be unleashed on our own shores. But it will not be due to foreign terrorists, but by our own voting of a leader with a philosophy of winners and losers, a bully.

How did it come to this? How did we lose our philosophical way from "win-win" to "winners and losers".

In some sense it has simply been crappy politicians. Globalization is a win-win foreign policy where we improve relations with foreign enemies by trade dependency. This has worked exceptionally well with China. Their economy depends on our economy. We've paid a heavy price though in the loss of manufacturing jobs and this sacrifice has never been fully explained to the American people. Our politicians haven't even bothered to try and explain how win-win is the strategy. Can you blame people for not understanding a philosophy never explained to them?

Because of failed politicians not explaining our overt win-win policy with China to Americans then we now have a President who ran on painting the US being the biggest loser and China the biggest winner in trade. Trump promises to reverse that. So, war with China? It is now possible under Trump.

Trump's idea of America's success is keeping score where the US is better than China relatively. It doesn't matter if the US has to decline,  just that China does worse. As long as we win.

But the problem is not Trump. The problem is the American people do not understand a globalization strategy as preferable to war.  Is China our political enemy today? Well, they certainly were during the cold war. So if you think our relations with China have improved then globalization needs to be credited with bringing that about. Mistakes have been made.

Trump is a symptom and not the problem. Trump reflects an American people who are willing to buy into a philosophy of "winners and losers" versus "win-win", "win-win" that has been hugely successful since 1972.

Irreni World Scale is win-win philosophy that encompasses every single person on this planet; ergo "World Scale". Irreni World Scale only considers "win-win" politics. Conflict in Irreni is managed through trade dependency and mutual self-interest concerns. We may be enemies philosophically, just like communism and democracy are opposed, but in reality we co-exist just like China the US today.

The Irreni World Scale solution today then is to reject any "winners and losers" philosophy and embrace "win-win". Its not too late to reverse course on this. Only disaster is in store for us and the world using a philosophy where winners conquer losers. This is a cycle that was tried throughout most of human history, always with the same devastating results and so today will be no different.

What we need today is love actually, win-win.

The Intelligentsia Problem

Hi! Happy Friday!

The US and the World governments have an intelligentsia problem that has long been predicted so often that it is a trope in speculative science fiction.

http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/john-oliver-responds-trump-presidency-what-fck-do-we-do-now-two-things

What has gotten lost amidst all of the demagoguery,  sensationalism, click-bait hate and histrionics that is Donald Trump has been Trump's complete and total incompetence. The odds of Trump succeeding at being President are exactly the same as the Infinite Monkey Theorem:
The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare.
Or, as John Oliver stated, the odds of Trump being successful are the same as a wombat successfully piloting an airplane.

There is a lot of punditry that could splayed here. For example, people assume that a billionaire must be competent because a billionaire has a billion dollars. To which one can easily point to any lottery ticket winner. George Bush Jr. and Donald Trump were both lottery winners in life's accident of birth lottery. Being rich has absolutely no correlation with competence but people think it does.

But Irreni World Scale is not about punditry, instead, Irreni is about solutions.

The problem is Intelligentsia

Intelligentsia is a problem and the problem is best captured by a quote from William F. Buckley Jr.:

I am obliged to confess I should sooner live in a society governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston telephone directory than in a society governed by the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University.
-William F. Buckley Jr.
Would anyone hire a plumber to perform brain surgery on themselves? That's the problem with Buckely's thinking, and Republican voter thinking today. The travesty here is that Buckley's education was Yale, equal to Harvard.  This is called cognitive dissonance. It is also called a lack of self-awareness. We need political competence and education the same way Buckley used political education and competence to make a career out of criticizing political education and competence.

The intelligentsia problem is a fundamental problem in Democracy today. Republicans don't trust intelligentsia precisely for the same reason Buckley didn't: they are perceived as all liberals even though they are not. George Bush Jr. was a guy you could have a beer with. Al Gore was seen as too intellectual, even though his grades in college were average. Were either one of the really competent?

There is no mechanism for testing competence for office. Imagine, though, if members of Congress and the Senate had to pass competency tests in order to get elected and then also to re-qualify annually to stay elected. We wouldn't need term limits. I'm convinced 100% of members in Congress today couldn't pass any test.

Competency testing could solve the intelligentsia problem because conservatives would pass the test same as liberals, thus breaking the misconception with Republican voters the intelligentsia are all liberal.

So why don't we test for competence? Why didn't the founders of the US provide for competency testing as a qualification for office? The short answer is that the testing itself would become political. For example, imagine religious questions being added to competency tests. Religious people would claim that these questions are for moral and character competency. Ugh. Who would make the test?

The future Intelligentsia, Irreni solution is teams as governments

I'm currently in the process of writing a book describing the Irreni World Scale government platform and have yet to write the chapter on teams as governments. I need to introduce the concept here. The best intelligentsia solution is for us to all mingle together, whether we want too or not.

I'll be brief and tease out in one paragraph about how mingling in Irreni works. Irreni turns power on its head and starts authority using government of teams, not the Federal government. Team sizes are initially pegged to be 30 people where this number is subject to experimentation. Irreni World Scale has a single, Federal, world-wide government with a sole power; the power to determine the members of these small government teams using a recipe of dependency and productivity, talented and untalented, low-to-high intelligence, and so on. Why determine the make-up rather than self-selected groups? Because the systemic problem with social groups today is birds of a feather flock together. As a consequence people with negative social problems such as drug addiction get outcast from the community at large today into prisons and streets. With respect  the intelligentsia problem the liberal intelligent people flock to the Ivy-league college towns or Silicon Valley. The liberals have amassed in cities that are not represented at all in the US Constitution and these cities have come to be much larger than any State in the Union when the Union was originally conceived. Birds of a feather flock together needs to be broken up. Irreni World Scale does that by ensuring all walks of life get mixed together. Now, how the small government teams are orchestrated so as  to build teams-of-teams is for another day, you'll just have to wait for the book.

The now Intelligentsia solution is national competency tests

Irreni World Scale will take a couple of hundred years to complete. We need solutions now.

It would be nice if we could use competency tests for the likes of being President so that we don't ever again have a wombat fly this plane.

But how?

The solution is two-fold:
  1. Direct democracy voting to approve competency tests.
  2. Applying national competency tests in the same device that delivers the results publicly.
Direct democracy used today for legislation like ballot measures is a tragedy and anathema to the very objectives desired. It's for the children, the bond measure is always for the children.

However, Internet-age, direct democracy for non-legislation purposes is a huge opportunity being missed today.

For example, have you ever asked yourself why are we still polling when we could all just fill out forms on the Internet? Why not just have people fill out surveys on the Internet? Why indeed. I imagine the answer to that question is the exact same answer that applies to many of our political problems today: money.

The upshot is that Irreni World Scale does provide a direct democracy solution that can be implemented immediately: the Vote Bank using the Device of Loving Life (DOLL). The DOLL is simply a government smart phone given to everyone with a vote-bank application.  Everyone having a DOLL empowers everyone voting to use the Vote Bank; which is software that flips voting on its head. Instead of casting a vote on a single day and having the vote counted, one deposits a vote permanently. For example, the day after a Presidential election then a vote for the next President in four-years is deposited immediately, available to be changed any time until election day. No reason to take polls if the data is real. No reason to get out the vote because votes are on deposit.

Depositing votes is a mighty powerful tool. However, before using this novel idea we test. The plan for Irreni is to test out direct-deposit votes for other political purposes such as replacing polling.

We can use the vote bank today for our little intelligentsia problem. The intelligentsia solution is to create competing competency tests that we can vote on now using direct democracy for choosing the tests to be given. The test with the most votes wins. The tests would be administered on the DOLL and the results  made public via the DOLL immediately, no media or other intermediary. No monkey business. :-)

Solutions, not punditry

Solutions are what we need today. That's what Irreni World Scale brings to the table.

The Succession

The Succession

I labeled the California Succession Amendment using the word "Succession" as a kinda joke. This is not about secession. This is about the continuation, the next in a sequence, of what country carries forth American ideals. We are asking red state America to remove California from the Union via a Constitutional Amendment so we can continue our cherished American ideals.

Succession:
2 c :  the continuance of corporate country personality
Climate change is a very real threat and our American heritage is to lead on liberty and justice. We here in California will lead on climate change as a continuance of the American way. In addition California will lead on the great global refugee crisis due to climate change that is about to beset liberty and justice throughout the entire world.

The golden state wishes to still be the golden door. California is requesting that the United States remove California from the Union precisely because California wishes to take up the torch of liberty; take up that burdensome, awesome yoke of leadership by example assumed that day in 1776 when we the people became the first world Democracy. California is requesting to be the next in succession of liberty and justice for all.

Our current President elect has said climate change is not real. Our current President elect has said he will kill not just the terrorists, but their families. Our current President elect is a wanna be terrorist: he has repeatedly said he will kill civilians as a military strategy of non-surprise. Killing civilians is a strategy of terrorists. We are not terrorists. Our current President elect denies climate change and would deny Muslims entry into this country. Our current President elect has stated that the use of nuclear weapons is on the table. And they voted for him. And they voted for him...with eyes wide open...knowing full-well these things.

We here in California aim to continue the sequence of American ideals we still  demand from ourselves today: liberty and justice for all. Denying climate change, killing civilians, killing families of terrorists, denying refugees and threatening nuclear arms is not liberty and justice for all. It is not the American way. The denial of liberty and justice for all cannot be tolerated, especially with the compassionate world need of climate change response.

Over the last two decades the Trump voters have made it clear how much they support the policies that have culminated with the President elect, crowned if you will with a crown of fear and withdrawal and not liberty and justice. Make America Great Again is a cowardly,  inward looking philosophy at a time the world needs us to have courage and be prepared to make sacrifices for world good.  Consider that three-fourths of the states have Republican governors and legislatures; that Republicans control the Congress, the Senate and the Presidency; and it becomes clear what we Californians must do: Act.

Act and act now. Climate change is upon us,  we do not have time to wait even four more years. Liberty and justice cannot be put on hold while the rest of America comes to its senses, or not.

We must act now. We must act today. We must Calexit.

Talking Calexit and California Succession Amendment

Hi! Happy Sunday!

Just a reminder that Irreni World Scale is about solutions not punditry.

The solution discussed in this blog post is the proposed "California Succession Amendment" (CSA).

The CSA was a blog post without comment to make for ease of dissemination.

Here I present short, brief talking points for California becoming its own country.

The Succession

I labeled the CSA using the word "Succession" as a kinda joke. This is not about secession. This is about the continuation, the next in a sequence, of what country carries forth American ideals. We are asking red state America to remove California from the Union so we can continue our cherished American ideals.

Give me your tired, your poor,

California is requesting to be the next in succession of liberty and justice for all.

Our current President elect has said climate change is not real. Our current President elect has said he will kill not just the terrorists, but their families. Over the last two decades the Trump voters have made it clear how much they support the policies that have culminated with the President elect, crowned if you will with a crown of fear and withdrawal and not liberty and justice. We must act now. We must act today. We must Calexit.

Amendments

If California is gone then then the US government will be conservative enough to pass the following constitutional amendments. Note that because of the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment then these necessarily have to be federal amendments.

Here are just some of the conservative amendments possible with California out of the picture.
  1. Marriage is between one man and one woman.
  2. Abortion is illegal.
  3. Bathroom usage must be by birth-certificate gender.
  4. Anyone can discriminate based upon religion.
  5. Everyone has the right to open carry guns.

Why California?

So why California? Why not some other liberal state like New York, Hawaii or Oregon?

  1. Liberal media. Hollywood is a core piece of liberal media. Eject California and then you eject Hollywood. When California becomes a country Hollywood will necessarily have to turn to California national politics. Liberal newspapers and web sites are in all large metropolitan  cities. Hollywood is only in California.
  2. Largest economy. Central to the CSA is transferring the US National Debt to the state being kicked out. Only California has a large enough economy to support the most debt.
  3. Isolated. New York, Chicago and other large metropolitan bastions of more tightly integrated with the continental US.
  4. 53 Representative vote count. Getting rid of California representatives will increase the percent of Republicans in Congress more than any other single state and thus ensuring an easy path for passing amendments.
  5. 55 Electoral vote count. The President will be permanently conservative.

Why a Constitutional Amendment?

Because it can be repealed.

When I talk about Calexit and the CSA everyone thinks secession like with Texas.  People think of a civil war. People think of guns and violence.

No. This is a digital age. Computers move at the speed of light and so can repealing this amendment.

What's being proposed here is a Constitutional Amendment. Repeal the amendment and California is now a State again.

If the amendment can be easily repealed then isn't that a huge risk?

Major Risks

  1. California currency. Foreign investors may be reluctant to engage the California currency.
  2. California failure. What if California financially fails?
  3. Cold feet. The US gets cold feet and immediately reinstates California.
The sole insurance policy needed for these risks is to have California assume the entire US National Debt.

National Debt Risk Insurance?

The debt assumption first and foremost is insurance against cold feet. Repealing the CSA means taking back on the entire US National debt.

  1. Cold feet insurance. The debt is a 16 trillion dollar poison pill.
  2. Cutting taxes. Cutting taxes is Trump administration necessity. Trump wants to cut taxes that will initially induce huge deficits until trickle-down economics creates jobs. That's the theory anyway. Trump can't do that today because of the existing debt. If Trump starts with no debt then he has a green light to cut taxes.
  3. Long-term insurance with the two debts. Assuming CSA passes in Trump's first year of office then he will have eight years to run trillion dollar deficits. He can do this because an 8-10 trillion debt is sustainable as has been already proven and even without the California economy. If the US works it way into another 10 trillion dollar debt over eight years then repealing the CSA  is no longer an option.
  4. Currency insurance.  To quote Donald Trump, "If a man borrows $100,000 from the bank and can't pay it back, the man is in trouble. If a man borrows $2 billion from the bank and he can't pay it back then the bank is in trouble." By assuming the full debt of the US today then this ensures that foreign countries will invest with California so as to keep interest payments coming. This is insurance for California currency stability and financial success.

Mass Liberal Migration

The CSA admits reality, an already existing reality that liberals are going to start fleeing the red states in terror and in fear for their lives. Muslims, Mexicans young people will flee the red states. Women who believe in abortion will flee. The mass exodus of liberals from red states to California will only continue to solidify an already untenable political party imbalance existing today.

The CSA is just an affirmation of today's reality. California is ideologically juxtaposed to conservatives and will only become more so under Trump. We are a nation intractably divided.

Social Experiment and Financial Competition

Today each side of the liberal-conservative divide is shouting over the other that one society is better than the other. Or that one financial system like trickle-down economics is better than the other.

So, why not have a bake off? Why not let both liberals and conservatives play out their social and financial ideals and see what works out? There are four possibilities:

  1. US succeeds, California fails. This is proof liberal policies don't work and if Californians come to their senses then the CSA can easily be repealed.
  2. US succeeds, California succeeds. No harm, no foul. Liberals and conservatives have gone their separate ways.
  3. US fails, California succeeds. California can help out the US where if today the US fails due to Trump policies there is no other option.
  4. US fails, California fails. Then the CSA can be repealed in an attempt to overcome divided we fall.
For me personally I think the social experimentation and financial competition are the only ways to heal today's current party divide. Talking is not going to cut it. We need to see both liberal and conservative plans in real-world action working side-by-side, unfettered by current party obstructionism.

Constitutional Opportunity

Red state America has an opportunity with the CSA to kick California out, amend the constitution, and then repeal the CSA after a few years. How could this work? Easy, assuming conservative economics work then the Trump administration economy will eventually be going gang busters with no national debt. In that case then repealing the CSA reinstates the debt but now the US is ready to meet the debt challenge.

How To Treat Trump

Hi! Happy Saturday!

Irreni World Scale is about solutions, not punditry.

Problem: How do we treat Trump, his supporters and his voters?

Should we give Trump a chance? Should we condone but not approve? Should we put the country first? Should we work with his voters but not him? What's the right answer here?

Solution: Treat them like terrorists.

The reason we don't negotiate with terrorists is we don't want to encourage the behavior.

Trump is a bully. Trump said on national TV during a Republican primary he would kill not only the terrorists, but their families.  Trump's go-to methods are insults and threats. If anyone anti-Trump is thinking about "reaching across the aisle" or "Ameri-cans vs Ameri-can'ts" then they need to ask themselves: are you encouraging future political campaigns in America to use the means of hate to get elected?

This is definitely an "ends doesn't justify the means" argument. The same as with not-negotiating with terrorists.

Trump is 100% about bullying and 0% about understanding politics. Trump is on record stating he had no idea about any Obama-care replacement but only a one word answer, "terrific". And his voters bought it. Is that the kind of campaigning you want at every level of government going forward? Do you want to encourage that kind of voting? If not then we need to to tow the line: do not negotiate.

This is not a case of minor bullying or gaffes. Bullying is who Trump is. He mocked, derided and ridiculed the free press every single campaign stop in front of millions of his supporters. This is a country with a core value of freedom of the press. Pile onto that the Donald loves press favorable to him when Trump used his friend at the National Enquirer to smear Ted Cruz then you have all the trappings of a despot.

Trump is a real extensional threat to everything we hold dear.

Trump Supporters and Voters

Love Trumps Hate. Trump supporters are mocking protesters because the argument is that there is hate behind the protest.

Wrong. The protesters are showing solidarity with the LGBT and people of color who are about to be oppressed bigly during the Trump years.  That is the love that is trumping hate.

So how do we treat the supporters and voters?

The voters are easy.

Rub their noses in it continuously for four years. Any political discussion needs to be ferociously met with "nasty woman", "grab them by the pussy", "Mexicans are rapists", "build a wall". Do not talk policy. Do not talk politics. Just remind them that if someone votes for a racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, fat-shaming, ugly-shaming, free-speech hating bully then they have to own it. And by own it I mean there is no "but". I mean there is no 'but' as in "but Clinton..." For shame, for shame, for shame.

That's how to treat the voters. Whenever discussions turn to politics then just shame away.

And his supporters?

As to his supporters, well, it needs to get more real. His supporters not only need to be shamed, but rejected. Under no circumstances does this mean violence.
I'm not talking government force or violence. I'm talking about denying them any attention in the media. Ignore them in public, shame them in private.  I'm talking do not hire them for jobs. Do not wait on them at a restaurant. If Newt Gingrinch sits down at your table, walk out.

We cannot normalize Trumps behavior, the price is too high.

Why isn't it okay to cooperate, even a little, with the Trump regime? Because the Fourth Estate is dead. Trump got billions of dollars of free media time precisely because his bullying theatrics sell, bigly.

The only firewall, the only bulwark, against a torrent of future bullying by all political candidates is the complete and total rejection of everything Trump.

Media time is expensive. Trump has now cleared a path for free media time. Do you really think your future politicians can avoid that click-bait honeypot?

The ends doesn't justify the means. What's at stake here if we treat with Trump is nothing less than a total collapse of our political class into nothing more than a steaming pile of bullies.

The stakes are high and that's why this must be treated on par with terrorism. That means the commitment to not negotiate with Trump must as equally as high as not negotiating with terrorists.

Do not politically acknowledge, negotiate, or treat with Trump, or his supporters or his voters. Just "you voted for Mr. grab them by the pussy" shame them.

The entire future of our political discourse is at stake.

Election Joy!

Hi! Happy Election Day!

Today we are having an American melt-down, an Ash versus the Evil Dead level of anxiety...

Ash vs. Evil Dead

 Irreni recommends:
Try Buddhism,

or, or, cut off your hand and strap on a chainsaw! :-0
Wait, what? Why is Irreni recommending a non-scientific solution?

It's true, Irreni is about science. However, any government solution is a human management solution. Human management solutions for which the science today is still very early on. So we still need to manage unknowns and sometimes those unknowns have well established practices handed down through the ages that work simply based upon trial-and-error.

I don't have anxiety about this election...because I practice Buddhism. In fact I don't have anxiety about anything out of my control. I never worry about things out of my control.

Why not?

Because in my early twenties I discovered the practice of Buddhism. Key word here is practice. I'm still an atheist and a militant anti-theist. I do not believe in anything supernatural.

See the thing is that Buddhism represents something no western religion could ever dream up: discipline and exercise of self-control. Where the 12 step program just tells you to have the serenity to accept the things you cannot change, Buddhism actually gives you the tools.

Discipline: there's a four letter word for you. Exercise is another. That's like work. As opposed to say, praying. Oh Buddhism teaches prayer as well, but that is not what is being recommended here. What's being recommended here are only the exercises like meditation that discipline the mind.

Buddhism represents  real-world mental exercises such as meditation that produce real-world results. Nothing supernatural about it.

In fact, Buddhism contains within its teachings multiple ways to achieve the same ends. Because, as we all know, one size does not fit all. It even says in the manual, "WARNING: if this doesn't work or is harmful for you then don't continue."

Meditation, yoga, visualization, and breathing techniques are just some of the ways to discipline your emotional state.

In other words, Buddhism is about growing the fuck up and so that you quit catering to your fucking impulsive emotions.  :-)

Here's the ironic thing. There isn't a single tradition, a single practice, in the western religions like Judaism, Christianity and Islam worth keeping. Not one. Western religions offer nothing of value to the non-religious. There isn't a single practice of the Christianity I was raised with that I practice in my daily life. Western religions are utter garbage at best.

On the other hand, Buddhism and eastern religions when stripped down of all the mysticism, tradition and supernatural crap represent real discipline and exercise with real world benefits.

Buddhism and eastern philosophy teach the following emotional states have no value. Here's a list of the some of the negative energies:
  1. hate
  2. low self-esteem
  3. anxiety
  4. guilt
  5. fear
  6. anger
  7. stress
In other words, the objective of the discipline and exercise of Buddhism is to remove the items in that list completely from your mind as much as possible.

I started practicing Buddhist disciplines in my early twenties, right as I moved to California from Indiana. Driving in California is a lot more stressful than driving in Indiana. I wanted to remove that driving stress so I put my Buddhist practices to the test. My ultimate solution, i.e. not the first attempt, was a video game visualization. Whenever I drive I now visual the objective as winning a video driving game. I score points whenever I avoid cars that try to hit me. I transitioned from stress to reward. I transitioned from the stress of anger and cussing at people for cutting me off to new rewards given to myself for avoiding the collision. I'm drive safely without stress and always enjoy myself. I love driving no matter how bad the drivers.

And here's the thing, I'm the better driver for it.

Buddhism has long taught that hate, low self-esteem, anxiety, guilt, fear, anger and stress do not produce the healthy mental state required to make decisions; and further these emotions do not produce the optimal state of mind to achieve ones best effort. Buddhism gives you the tools to use your mind. And that's cool.

My mind is clear in this election year. Is yours? I have no election 2016 fear. Do you? It is not a matter of blissful ignorance  but disciplined mental conditioning so as to accomplish accepting the things I cannot change...with Serenity:

Try Buddhism. Just the discipline and exercises. Strip out the supernatural, traditions and mysticism. You may find that works for you if you find yourself stressed on this election day about things out of your control. And if not? Then just walk away.

Or try Yoga. :-) Try Yoga.

The Day The Music Died

Hi! Happy Tuesday!

Nov. 8, the day the democracy died.

A long long time ago
All Presidential election talk =  Congress overlooked and re-elected.
I can still remember how
Plea deal for all felony charges = no jury trial.
That music used to make me smile
Arbitration replacing small claims court = can't win at trial at all.

And I knew if I had my chance
Sworn to secrecy = arbitration hidden.
That I could make those people dance
Banks shopped State's with laxest laws = health insurance companies soon will too.
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
Banks consolidated to too big to fail = health insurance companies soon will too.
But February made me shiver
Clinton polled win in California the day she announced =  my vote is nothing except to spend a year talking about.
With every paper I'd deliver
1999 Telecommunications Act = media companies consolidated to a few.
Bad news on the doorstep
For profit news = sensationalism lowest hanging fruit.
I couldn't take one more step
Consolidated media's profit = fourth estate.
I can't remember if I cried
American fight club of left vs right = permanent profit machine.
When I read about his widowed bride
Hate Obamacare scare but the solution promise is only a single word, "terrific" = hate and fear is the only there.
Something touched me deep inside
We talk like neither the co-equal Congress nor the required political party exist = President trained in our brain as a dictator with no one else that matters.
The day the music died
November 8 = we vote 99% of Congress back in place but with whom we don't approve and with two Presidential candidates of record breaking ratings of public distaste.
This'll be the day that I die
Or, or, you can get behind Irreni World Scale = woo hooo!

The Axis of Evil

Hi! Happy Sunday!

I was reading an article today that struck me as more than a wee bit of Hunting The Snark:

From this Quartz Article:
"It’s easy to dismiss those [Trump voters] who disagree with us as either ignorant or malevolent. Oxford moral philosophy professor Robinson is neither. And nor, ultimately, is each and every one of the millions of people who’ve chosen to support Trump. Anyone who hopes to understand and address the concerns of those backing the Republican candidate will need to set aside such simplistic preconceptions."
Just as a reminder, Irreni World Scale is about solutions and not punditry. The Irreni model of governing is inclusive, everyone belongs. There are no outsiders with Irreni and all seven-billion people on this planet are welcomed. That's the solution. You might say, "love everyone" by asking people to voluntarily reject demagoguery.

Fear and shame define demagoguery and so there is no mystery, none whatsoever, of where Trump's supporters come from. They come from a true Axis of Evil: right-wing media. After forty-years of every day hatred there is zero doubt where these haters came from. None. All of Trump's talking points are staples of right-wing media. Trump could easily be an AM radio talk show host and no one would think anything of it. Trump would not stand out, at all. His hatred and fear is right-wing media stock-and-trade. There is no reason for the Hunting of the Snark where Trump's voters are concerned. There is no mystery.

The solution to the demagoguery is we need to talk to each other, warts and all. First and foremost we the people need to come together as a nation and all of us agree to build media we will support together, without demagoguery. We need a common set of facts and fertile soil for respect. If we don't do this then the teeth gnashing that exists today will never end. We need a media commons that does not promote a single morality. Some issues like abortion will always provide a great moral divide. The mistake is not admitting moral relativity, the mistake is dismissing people who do not share your moral objectivity.

As an aside, I am saddened by Quartz interview of the "moral philosopher" primarily because a "moral philosopher" knows better, or should anyway. There is no free will and there is no moral objectivity.

Generally free-will gets lumped into two categories: human accountability and human programability. The human accountability argument goes that decisions live in some influence-free zone of personal pure will where the only influence is a person's own desire. When you make the choice then you own that choice 100%. However, even the most rabid free-will advocate admits temptation doesn't just knock at the door, the devil leans on the doorbell and so we have to resist and overcome our baser instincts in order to practice free-will.

We now know definitely that free-will does not exist. Every decision you make is intertwined with all kinds of influence, including what you had for lunch. In the philosophical book, "Thinking Fast and Slow", Daniel Kahneman tells the story of an experiment conducted in Spain. Judges who consider parole cases, whether to deny prisoners parole, do so all day in Spain as a occupation. Parole is morally important stuff where a person's life hangs in the balance. Is a prisoner going to be set free? It turns out that for prisoners whose cases were considered after lunch then they were more likely to be given parole than for those whose considered right before lunch.

Back to Trump voters. Trump didn't originate his demagoguery. All of his demagoguery originates in right-wing media. Similar to how Hitler just took advantage of the anti-semitism that already existed in Germany, Trump is just riding the wave of hourly and daily demagoguery pouring out of right-wing media. This suggests that if right-wing media keeps tacking with the same hatred and fear that they have been for forty years then nothing is going to change.

The question then is not where do Trump voters come from, but what do we do about right-wing media?

What we officially do is nothing and what we personally do is everything.

I've have consumed right-wing media since its inception with Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. Right-wing media spreads hate publicly via passive aggression. In today's world it is not acceptable to say, "I hate liberals". That's hate speech. However, one can insinuate one hates liberals by saying "Liberals hate me" and that is not considered outright hate speech and so prohibiting outright hate speech has failed. The hate speech just becomes passively encoded. I've listened enough to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and other right-wing media persons to know that "Liberals hate us" is a core message of their propaganda and demagoguery.

Conservatives need to admit that liberals are Americans and don't hate them. The irony of conservatives these days is that they wrap themselves in the flag of patriotism all the while dismissing an entire half of the population of this country that approves of Obama today. You can't dismiss half of America and then call yourself a patriot.

Liberals need to quit practicing a form of political correctness that results in a Hunting of the Snark of Trump voters or terrorists.

Love everyone. We are all in this together. The demagoguery of right-wing media promotes hate and fear of others and fosters more hatred and fear then there otherwise would be. That's on them. However, the political correctness of the left that tries to squash the speech of personal hatred and fear results in a free pass for people promoting hatred and fear; people who need to be called out. Ignoring a problem is on the people choosing to ignore it.

The problem with hatred and fear is not who is being hated. The problem is the choice itself: when people choose to hate or be under the spell of fear. When people choose  to hate and react to fear, or if their brain is such they can't help themselves then such people should not be dismissed. They are still human and our brothers. Those of us who have training to manage hatred and fearful instincts need to help those who do not, otherwise we will be doomed.

The Axis of Evil is right-wing media demagoguery.  Right-wing media needs to be held to account. However, any censorship or any prohibition of right-wing media is not the solution. No, the solution is we the people need to talk about changing the nature of right-wing media and to get conservatives to voluntarily reject demagoguery. It is not going to be easy. Hate and fear are primordial and hard-wired into our very DNA. But no matter how hard the fight is, convincing people to voluntarily reject demagoguery is the only effective way.

A Teaching Moment

Hi! Happy Friday!

If you wish Information and Improvement from the Knowledge of others and yet the same time express your self firmly fix'd in your present Opinions, modest sensible People, who do not love Disputation, will probably leave you undisturb'd in the Possession of your Error; and such a Manner you can seldom hope to recommend your self in pleasing your Hearers, or to persuade those whose Concurrence you desire.
--Benjamin Franklin, The Autobiography of B.F.

Trump is boringly average as a CEO and represents a teaching moment to  clean-up corporate America.

Just as a reminder, Irreni World Scale is not about punditry but solutions.

The solution here is to clean up corporate America by using Trump's nomination as CEO as a teaching moment about corporate America power behavior.

Trump will continue merrily along as a CEO after this election. If by some off chance he does get prosecuted for sexual harassment the origin will have been during a political campaign not corporate management. That is shameful.

It is time to indict and prosecute the entire corporate establishment in America that accepts this kind of behavior from any CEO. It is unconscionable to me that this behavior for Trump's 40 years as CEO is allowed and will continue unabated in corporate America.

Trump is a boringly average person of power. Trump is an executive trope. Trump is par for the course. Trump is a hackneyed stereotype. There is nothing remotely original about Trump and his behavior as a CEO. Nothing. His asshole behavior is expected behavior and has been forever for people in power.  The only thing that stands out from the crowd is the extent of his behavior, not the behavior itself.

CEOs are assholes.

On a different note  a Starbucks mocha is, for me, the ideal delivery system for my morning mouth dance of cinnamon. Mmmm. It is not so much that I like the Starbucks mocha as it is I love the cinnamon swirl on top. Okay, just had to clear my head. Let's go.

Mybrid: "Alex, I'll take assholes for $200."
Alex: "This man ran for president as a CEO in 2016."
Mybrid: "Who is Donald Trump?"

I often get asked why I'm not in management. I have a graduate degree from UC Berkeley in computer science and I'm working in Silicon Valley. Seems like a natural.

The short answer is CEOs are assholes and life is too short to get caught up in that network of negativity...for me. Let's name a few asshole CEOs I'm familiar with in my profession: Bill Gates (Microsoft), Steve Ballmer (Microsoft), Scott McNealy (SUN), Larry Elison (Oracle), Steve Jobs (Apple), and Dave Pottruck (Schwab).

Trump represents a typical Fortune 500 CEO.

My personal experience is I worked for Dave Pottruck. Dave Pottruck is an interesting case of asshole CEO. Like Trump, Pottruck had both sexual and anger issues. Pottruck's rise through the ranks of Schwab as a company was in part to compensate for a reputation on Wall Street of being "out of New York" and being too "soft" to make it on Wall Street. Wall Street is proud of having a reputation of cussing, anger, and that being an asshole is a requirement to get ahead. Trump fits right in. Make no mistake about it: Trump is boringly average as a person of power.

Dave Pottruck was a "no nonsense" guy, i.e. tough guy, that Wall Street would respect. Pottruck was also a womanizer. Sound familiar? Pottruck's behavior landed him in anger management class and landed the company Schwab sexual harassment payments before he became CEO. I will say it again, Pottrucks behavior was on full display before he became CEO. And Pottruck kept his CEO job for years.

There has been much made about Hillary Clinton being an asshole. Well, guess what? That is corporate America. That is the good ole boy network. The CEOs are small children who rule by anger, cussing and yelling. And many of them are sexual harassers.

Hillary is in many ways an asshole's asshole and what's required to run this country.

Asshole management is why I contract rather than work full-time and climb the corporate ladder. Life is too short to play anger management games. Back stabbing and negativity runs corporate America and Hillary Clinton has a personality to deal with it.

The asshole problem is much larger than Trump. It is an entire power ecosystem that promotes dysfunction in leaders and on down the line. It doesn't take long climbing the corporate ladder before one encounters requirements of being an asshole.

This is a male legacy. If we want women in power, reasonable people in power then we need to clean up the asshole network. Because let's be real: good ole boy network is just a euphemism for asshole network.

Finally, I will leave you with an example of someone who both ran a business and also engaged in politics and he did so by being pleasant.

I give you Benjamin Franklin:
I continued this ... Habit of expressing my self in Terms of modest
Diffidence, never using when I advance any thing that may possibly be disputed, the Words, Certainly, undoudtedly, or any others that give the Air of Positiveness to an Opinion; but rather say, I conceive, or
I apprehend a Thing to be so or so, It appears to me, or I should
think it so or so for such and such Reasons, or I imagine it to be so,
or it is so if I am not mistaken. This Habit I believe has been of
great Advantage to me, when I have had occasion to inculate my
Opinions and persuade People into Measures that I have been from time to time engag'd in promoting. And as the chief ends of Conversation are to inform, or to be informed, to please or to persuade, I wish well meaning sensible People would not lesson their Power of doing Good by a Positive assuming Manner that seldom fails to disgust, tends to create Opposition, and to defeat every one of those Purposes for which Speech was given us, to wit, giving or receiving Information, or Pleasure: For if you would inform, a positive dogmatical Manner in advancing your Sentiments, may provoke Contradiction and prevent candid Attention.

No Party, No Government

Hi! Happy Thursday!

<3

An excerpt from The Hitchhicker's guide to the Galaxy*

Chapter 36

The flying saucer in which Ford Prefect had stowed away had stunned the world  [and] there marched from it, down the ramp, an immense silver robot, a hundred feet tall.
     It held up a hand.
"I come in peace," it said, adding after a long moment of further grinding, "take me to your Lizard."
Ford Prefect, of course, had an explanation for this, as he sat with Arthur and watched the non-stop frenetic news reports on the television, none of which had anything to say other than to record that the thing had done this amount of damage which was valued at that amount of billions of pounds and had killed this totally other number of people, and then say it again, because the robot was doing nothing more than standing there, swaying very slightly, and emitting short incomprehensible error messages.
"It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."
"You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"
"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford. "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"
*No lizards were harmed in the making of this blog posting; further my sincere apologies for implying lizards are in any way as slimy as politicians.**

**Apologies to slime everywhere for implying slime could be as dirty as politicians.

No Party, No Government.

No party, no government simply is a reminder that the President is not a dictator, at least not yet anyway. This is why Obama accomplished little as President; the Congress stonewalled him for eight years.

First: the Democratic party is dead.

The Democratic party died in 1980 when Reagan took office. What does it mean to say a party has died? What it means is that there is no coherent set of political ideas being orchestrated publicly and in Congress to create a national character. One telling fact that the Democratic party died in 1980 is the voting record of Democrats during the eight years of the Reagan administration. The Democrats crossed party lines to vote against their own party more times under Reagan then under any other President before Reagan. If memory serves correctly I also read the amount Democrats voted crossed party lines more times also exceeded all the previous years of Democratic party history combined.

When Bill Clinton took office his first two years these were failed years because the Democrats refused to cooperate with Bill. It wasn't until the Republicans took over Congress that Bill was able to get anything done. The Clintons were and still are Washington outsiders and are despised greatly by many Democrats on the hill. Hillary and Pelosi are enemies, just like Obama and Pelosi.

And in this election? Where is the Democratic party? Where are the women in Congress stumping for Hillary? Ever see Diane Feinstein on the stump for Hillary? Or Nancy Pelosi? Or Barbra Boxer? The one lone woman in Washington speaking out is Elizabeth Warren. She is not so much stumping for Hillary as she is working her signature political issue: cooperate accountability. Tweets slamming Trump are not support for Hillary.

Second: the Republican party is dead.

For the last eight years the Republicans have controlled all of Congress and yet have only been able to orchestrate one political objective: to be anti-Obama. If a political party cannot work with an opposition party President then it is a dead party.

Add to this the Republican presidential campaign that has completely destroyed what was left of the Republican party.

And it is not looking good for simply re-building the Republican party as it was. The US is moving to a less religious country every day and it is unclear if the Republican party can survive as a Christian-only, Christian-privilege party.

Third: the immediate future without parties.

What does it mean to be a country? Traditionally the political parties have answered this question by promoting platforms and understanding that politics requires sticking together. Even when the opposing party was President the political parties co-operated. No more.

Let's consider a political-party, best case scenario where Democrats re-take the Senate and the Congress.

What platform would the Democrats roll out? Do we know?

No, because the Democrats do not have a platform. Further, Hillary will not get her personal legislative agenda through Congress either because she is not the party. Need proof? Just look at the first two-years of both Presidents Bill Clinton and Barak Obama. Bill Clinton wasn't able to get anything through Congress his first two years with an all Democratic Congress and neither did Obama.

Now I know what you are thinking: what about Obama-care? See that's the thing: it is not "Obama-care". Obama did submit a proposal for health-care legislation to the House. And do you want to know what happened to that proposal? Pelosi rejected 100% of it. Flushed.  Instead the House came up with their "own" version; "own" means written by the insurance companies. This resulted in Pelosi saying, "We'll have to pass it to see what's in it." Pelosi and Obama fought quite bitterly about health-care and in the end they finally decided to not work together. That is not a political party.

So, even if the Democrats were to take it all in 2016 there will be no cohesive political plan of any kind whatsoever. Instead there would just be the same rancor and bitter in-fighting we have seen in the Republican Congress and between Obama and Pelosi.

Fourth: Cruz, Trump, Bernie and Clinton are all party outsiders.

The last piece of evidence I submit as proof both parties are dead is that all of the top tier Presidential candidates in 2016 are political party outsiders.

  • Ted Cruz made his reputation calling out fellow Republicans in the Senate. Cruz publicly humiliated many fellow Republicans on immigration and fiscal issues to establish himself. Cruz would need to continue this, would have fought his own party as President the same as he did in the Senate.
  • Trump started his Republican campaign calling out McCain as a coward and not a hero for being captured.
  • Bernie has spent 30 years in Washington as an independent because he can't find it in himself to be in a party.
  • The Clintons have always been outsiders in Washington. It is telling that George Bush Jr. and Bill Clinton do not stump for their respective party and that both represent a shame to the party. It is also telling how there are no Democrats in Washington stumping for Hillary. She is on her own.

Hillary only appears to be a Washington insider. Her relations with Obama have always been strained and the public façade we see on the campaign trail is just that: a façade. Obama is not out on the stump for Hillary. In fact, Obama is not out on the stump for any one in his party.

That's because there is no Democratic party.

Fifth, Irreni World Scale is one solution.

I bring up the fact that both the Republican and Democratic party are dead for two reasons.

  1. The US government has been built on political parties since the very beginning. Those parties are defunct. Therefore our government is defunct. We need to replace it.
  2. Irreni World Scale is such a replacement. Irreni World Scale avoids the trap of political parties.

The failure of this political campaign season is about more than a presidential election disaster. It is also the story of walking-dead political parties; no party, no government.

We, as a country, need to start talking about wholesale replacement of our political system. Irreni World Scale is such a replacement.
